The Father of Lights: Our Light in the Darkness

I have never been comfortable with darkness. Growing up in a community where the power often went out for hours or even days, I remember rushing to switch on any light I could find. Darkness felt heavy, unsettling, and lonely; but light brought comfort, clarity, and peace. Even today, I cannot sleep in total darkness. I always look for a small speck of light in the room; whether from a lampstand or a faint glow slipping through a cracked door. Light has always made me feel safe, seen, and steady.

And perhaps that is why the name “the Father of lights” (James 1:17) moves me so deeply. God understands the darkness; not just the physical kind, but the spiritual darkness that surrounds our world today. We are living in perilous times, filled with confusion, fear, and moral decline. Yet God shines into that darkness with a light that never fades, never weakens, and never fails.

The Father of lights brightens our lives, destroys the shadows that try to overwhelm us, and brings hope where there seems to be none. His light is pure, steady, and unchanging unlike the shifting shadows of this world. And in His love, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, as “the light of the world” (John 8:12). Jesus steps into the darkest places of our hearts; our pain, our sin, our fear, our uncertainty and He brings a light that darkness cannot overcome. He redeems, restores, and guides us. His light exposes truth, heals wounds, and gives direction when we feel lost.

The same God who created the sun, moon, and stars wants to shine His light into every human life. And if we will simply receive Him, He will do what no earthly light can do: transform us from the inside out. He gives peace in chaos, clarity in confusion, and hope in hopelessness.

Beloved, as we follow the true Light, we must also be aware of the enemy, the one who is the very opposite of light. The Bible tells us that Satan “masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). He pretends to shine, but his light is false. His purpose is clear and destructive: “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10). In these dark and perilous times, many have been deceived by the enemy’s imitation of light; false teachings, false hopes, false promises. We must not fall victim. We must not be misled by the darkness pretending to be light.

The world is dark, but God is still the Father of lights. Jesus is still the Light of the world. And His light is still powerful enough to change any life that welcomes Him.

His light brings truth where lies have taken root, hope where despair has settled, and peace where chaos has reigned. His light breaks chains, heals hearts, and guides us safely through the shadows of this world. If we choose Him, if we open our hearts to the true Light, He will lead us into everlasting joy and peace.

Follow the Light that darkness cannot overcome. Follow the Light that leads to life.
