The Invisible God Made Visible: A Revelation of Christ’s Supremacy

Scripture Text: Colossians 1: 15-21

Introduction
Paul’s words in Colossians 1:15–22 pull back the curtain on the identity of Jesus Christ. These verses are not merely theological statements; they are a revelation of who Christ truly is, what He has done, and why He stands at the center of all creation and redemption. We live in a world that is filled with competing voices and shifting beliefs and in our primary text, the Apostle Paul reminds us that Christ is not just important; He is supreme.
Let's examine each verse to understand what the Apostle Paul is revealing about the supremacy of Christ:
Christ Reveals the Nature of God (Colossians 1:15)
Paul starts by stating that Christ is “the visible image of the invisible God.” I find this phrase captivating. To me, it signifies that Jesus not only reflects God but also reveals Him perfectly. All aspects of God's character, compassion, holiness, and authority are manifested in Christ. By observing Jesus, we gain a clear view of God's heart. Through Him, the invisible becomes visible.
Christ Is Supreme Over All Creation (Colossians 1:16–17)
Paul continues by showing Christ’s supremacy in creation. “Through Him God created everything… visible and invisible.” Christ is not part of creation; He is the source of it. Every throne, ruler, kingdom, and spiritual authority exists because He willed it. And not only did He create all things — “He holds all creation together.” The universe is sustained by His power. Our lives, our world, and every breath we take remain stable because He upholds them.
Christ Leads and Gives Life to the Church (Colossians 1:18)
Paul shifts from creation to the church: “Christ is also the head of the church, which is His body.” The church does NOT belong to human leaders or institutions, it belongs to Christ. As the first to rise from the dead, He becomes the beginning of a new creation, giving life, direction, and identity to His people. His resurrection establishes Him as first in everything.
Christ Reveals the Fullness of God and Brings Reconciliation (Colossians 1:19–22)
Paul concludes with the heart of the gospel: “God in all His fullness was pleased to live in Christ.” Jesus is fully God — not partially divine, not a messenger, but the complete expression of God’s fullness. And through His blood on the cross, Christ reconciled all things to Himself. Paul reminds us that we were once far away, separated by our thoughts and actions. But Christ made peace, restoring us to God and transforming us from enemies into sons and daughters.
Conclusion
Paul’s message in Colossians 1:15–22 elevates our perspective to see Christ as He truly is: the visible representation of the invisible God, the Creator and Sustainer of all things, the Head of the church, and the One who reconciles us through His blood. Recognizing His supremacy anchors our faith, deepens our worship, and clarifies our identity. We are no longer distant or defined by our past; we are brought close, made whole, and held together by the One who upholds the universe. Christ is preeminent in everything and when He becomes preeminent in our lives, everything else falls into its rightful place.
