Do you ever find yourself in what I call a "spiritual funk"? A spiritual funk occurs when you experience a sense of spiritual dryness, feel disconnected from God, face difficulties in prayer, not interested in volunteering/ministry service or lack motivation to do things that contribute to your spiritual growth e.g Bible study. This can lead to feelings of frustration, loneliness, or even discouragement.
Throughout my 30-year faith journey, I've encountered this a few times, and it's always an uncomfortable experience. If you've faced it, I want to assure you that it's normal to go through phases of dryness; several believers experience them from time to time. The important thing is to remember that the Lord is always present to support and guide you. Recently, I've found some things in my relationship with the Lord that help me stay strengthened and grounded, so far it's been working and I'd like to share some of those insights with you.
And so here are ten tips to help strengthen your faith in the Lord as you continue to run your race.
1. Immerse Yourself in Scripture
Studying and meditating on God's word daily can reignite your connection with God. Start with passages that bring comfort and encouragement, like Psalm 23 or Romans 8:38-39.
2. Pray Honestly and Consistently
Even if you feel distant, openly share your struggles with God. Prayer is a conversation, not a performance—He wants to understand what's in your heart.
3. Worship Through Music
Listening to worship songs regularly can shift your mindset and help you reconnect spiritually. Select songs that remind you of God’s faithfulness. Listen at home, at work, in the car etc... Let it feed your spirit.
4. Surround Yourself with Faith-Filled People
Join a Bible study, attend church, or simply talk with friends who uplift you spiritually. Community strengthens faith.
5. Serve Others
Sometimes, by concentrating on others and providing help, you can reignite your passion for faith. Participate in volunteer work, offer support, or renew your dedication to serving others through small acts of kindness.
6. Fast and Seek God’s Presence
Combining fasting with prayer can realign your heart and mind towards God. Fasting doesn't necessarily have to involve food—it can be abstaining from social media, TV, or any other distractions that pull you away from Him. (It is effective!)
7. Journal Your Faith Journey
Document your prayers, challenges, and instances of gratitude. Reflecting on past triumphs can serve as a reminder of God’s faithfulness. This is one of the main reasons I began this personal blog—to remind myself of God's faithfulness during the tough times. Writing it down is more impactful than merely discussing it with others. You can revisit it months or even years later.
8. Read Faith-Based Books or Devotionals
Books on spiritual growth can offer fresh perspectives and encouragement. Consider devotionals that speak to your current season.
9. Practice Gratitude
Even in a spiritual funk, there are blessings to be thankful for. Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s missing to what God has already provided.
10. Trust That This Season Will Pass
Faith isn’t about feeling close to God all the time—it’s about trusting Him no matter what. Spiritual funks are temporary, but God’s love is constant.
Psalm 55:22 – "Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken."
Isaiah 41:10 – "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
Proverbs 3:5-6 – "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."
These scripture verses remind us that even when we feel distant from God, He remains faithful, guiding and sustaining us.
Spiritual funks are a natural part of our christian faith, but they don't define your relationship with the Lord. Even when you feel distant, His presence and love remain constant. By turning to Scripture, prayer, worship, and community, you can reignite your spiritual passion and deepen your trust in Him. Remember, faith isn’t about perfect feelings—it’s about steadfast trust in a perfect and faithful God. Continue pressing forward, knowing that this phase will pass and lead to significant spiritual growth in your life.
Be strengthened and be encouraged my friend!
