Main Text: Matthew 6:25-32
This morning, after returning from the gym and parking in my driveway, I noticed two elegant little birds with red, gray, and white feathers perched on a tree in front of my porch. I stayed in my car for at least five minutes, watching these birds as they fed on the tree's fruits. Although it wasn't unusual to see birds in trees, I was particularly captivated by them this Monday morning. As I admired these small creatures, the words from Matthew 6:26 came to mind. I started to reflect, "If the Lord, in His boundless mercy and greatness, provides for these birds and other animals every day, why are humans, created in His image, facing starvation around the world today?"
Why should people experience hunger and lack basic necessities like clothing and shelter? This should not occur in our world! The Lord God, Creator of Heaven and Earth, granted humanity the authority to govern the earth and have dominion over everything, yet we struggle to feed ourselves and provide for others. From the beginning of creation, the Lord has supplied all we need to thrive on this earth; all He asked is that we be good stewards of it. Therefore, we must ask ourselves what has happened to the command God gave us. Why do so many people lack essential needs like food, clothing, and shelter? Why are children going hungry? Where have we gone wrong? We have no reason to lack these things because our heavenly Father has made provisions for His children.
Friends, we are created in the image of God, and His word even tells us Matthew 6: 26b, "Are you not of more value than they?" meaning we, as His image-bearers on earth, are more valuable and precious than the birds of the air which He created and consistently provides for. And so, you and I have no reason to lack anything, most especially the basic needs of life, because He has made them available to us.
If you read the entire main text, you'll understand that there is no need for us to be anxious about anything, as the Lord God has provided for His children. There is no reason for humanity to suffer from hunger because God has supplied more than enough to fulfill our needs. Sadly, we are living in difficult times, the last days, and significant changes are occurring globally. Poverty is evident even in the richest countries of the world. It's disheartening to witness how many children go to bed hungry and lack adequate clothing or safe housing.
We are already halfway through the end of the year, so I urge you to seize this moment to spread Christ's love in our world. Don't wait for the Christmas season before you take a decision; let's act today. Let's show more love to those in need by dedicating our time and resources.
For those of you, who are new to volunteer work or donating, you may be thinking, "How should I approach this? How can I help? Begin by researching local non-profit organizations in your area. Additionally, consider reaching out to your church to see if they collaborate with a ministry focused on assisting the needy and the sick in your community. Many churches have a department dedicated to this purpose.
Ways to help include:
Volunteer in soup kitchens & food banks
Serve in homeless shelters
Donating in Kind (i.e., food items, clothing, shoes, personal hygiene, etc.) to local charities that care for children and other organizations that support those in need.
Sponsor a child through organizations such as Compassion International. Your monthly contribution will go a long way to help a child in underserved communities.
Host a holiday event in any homeless shelter, skilled Nursing facility, retirement home in your area, etc.
Donate financially to support the groups and ministries that provide for those in need.
In addition to the above, pray for and send cards or letters to encourage missionaries and mission workers both in your communities and around the world.
As Christians, we have every reason to be a blessing to those around us, enhancing the lives of individuals who are suffering, hungry, and lacking basic necessities.
Let's genuinely represent the hands and feet of Jesus within our communities. By doing this, we will transform the lives of those we help, and it will also bring joy to the heart of the FATHER. Your good deeds will glorify His name. Matthew 6:15.
